matcha and caffeine: what the science actually says

how much caffeine is in matcha?

matcha contains approximately 19–44 mg of caffeine per gram.¹ the exact amount varies from tea to tea.

what does that mean by serving?

serving amount of caffeine
1g ~19–44 mg
2g ~38–89 mg
3g ~57–133 mg
4g ~76–178 mg

for context...

an 8 oz cup of coffee contains about 95 mg of caffeine.² a 2–4g serving of matcha can fall within the same range.

the caffeine itself is the same. the experience can be different.

matcha naturally contains l-theanine, an amino acid found in tea. research suggests that l-theanine and caffeine can work together to influence attention and cognitive performance.³

the caffeine isn't different, but you're not consuming it in isolation. there is NO universal caffeine number for matcha.

cultivar, shading conditions, harvest, and processing can all influence the composition of the finished tea. matcha is an agricultural product. not a standardized powder.

caffeine content is not a measure of quality. higher quality does not necessarily mean more caffeine — or less.¹

to understand the caffeine in your matcha, start with the dose.

how many grams are you actually drinking?
